After missing out on Neca’s first figure from TMNT: The Last Ronin, I thought I might be settling for the runner up prize with the Playmates version of the fully suited and booted titular turtle from the future.
However, after finally picking up the Playmates release for a great price on eBay a few months back, I can safely say that I need not have worried.
Even if this isn’t in the same league as the Neca release in some respects, Playmates still delivered a detailed, accessory-laden and fun action figure.

Sure, he’s a little limited in parts.
The articulation is good for an action figure but not quite at “adult collectable” level, so the posing is a bit limited.
But you can still get him into plenty of mean-enough poses that would make your ’80s and ’90s Turtles toys weep with aspiration.
Beyond that he has a great sculpt – he fully looks like a mutant turtle in a man suit.
And that’s fully complemented by the grungy paint wash that you get over everything that isn’t dark blue.

So, this definitely doesn’t feel like a consolation prize. This feels like an original TMNT toy all grown up.
Given the premise of The Last Ronin comic series, that means that Playmates nailed the brief.
